On multilane roads, stay right, except to pass
The left lane of a multi-lane highway is for passing only; it is not a "Fast Lane." The middle lane is for traveling or in some states still considered a passing lane, and the right lane is for traveling, entering, and exiting. Also, keep in mind that even while passing in a left lane you are not allowed to exceed the posted speed limit at any time. In almost every state the law also limits the number of cars you can pass before you have to reestablish yourself in a traveling lane. The magic number of cars you can pass is normally only 3. This makes it difficult to be in the left lane legally, we must be passing cars, but only three at a time, and must not exceed the speed limit. Overall remember, stay to the right unless passing. Traffic flows much smoother when we follow these rules and we’re all a lot safer!
